Week Three

Abstract collage: Original Photos

With the collage, I decided to base the theme off different colours, pink, mint and lavender as they’re my favourite colours and I am interested to see how it would affect the final pieces.

Abstract collages

1

A pink toned digital collage. I was worried that there would be too much negative space at the finished piece, however, once I put down a few flowers to crowd the piece up a little, I begun to like how this is turning out and by the end, I am just loving all the pink tones and how they complement the human pieces of the artworks.

2

A minty toned collage and this is a lot more unorganised compared to my pink pieces due to the fact that I decided to go for a piece where the patterns are touching the edges, but I unfortunately failed to plan out how I was going to make it cohesive and now the piece just looks like a mess, hopefully the Lavender piece will look neater.

Vectorized image

Original Image

Here is the original image taken from Instagram and cropped into a square shade, since it was originally a screenshot on my phone. I chose this photo as I loved the tones plus the interesting way this lady, Victoria De Angelis, took this self and I wanted to see what it would look like vectorised.

‘Unsuccessful’ piece

I’m putting unsuccessful in quotes because if it wasn’t for the criteria of this part of the project, I could say that this is a perfect finish and I would love to have this hanging on my wall as a poster, it is SO pretty with all the natural tones and her blue eyes popping. I had to change this as there was too few tones but I LOVE THIS PIECE!

Progression

Now here’s the image vectorised, I made the 6 colours option to get to this photo and I got to say, I really love how all the tones came up, it looks so pretty…. it’s a bit of a shame that I had to add all these crazy colours as I think this is something that I like but I have some criteria that I have to meet for this project so here come all the crazy colours!

CRAZY COLOUR TIME! I first started off with adding warm tones to her hair as her hair does give off a warm feeling and I feel like orange and yellow would fit well. Also, with some encouragement, I went crazier with the colours and added green and blue to her face, as I thought those were the opposite colours to the human skin tones and it would look slightly weird, which is what I was going for.

Adding more to her hair, I was inspired by the warm tones of her hair and how it was starting to look like flames, so I began to add red and deep orange to the lightest parts and light orange and yellows to the darkest parts to make it look like fire.

The fire is now sweeping through her hair, shining brightly against the darkest tones of her clothes and shadows, creating a lot of nice contrast that stands out against the darkness.

The fire has now taken over the hair, shining brightly against her face and the bright colours now taken centre stage with the shadows, making an interesting piece where there’s dark shadows contrasting with vivid shades.

Final Piece

ALL FINISHED, YAY!

What we have here is a finished vectorize experiment that I had created using adobe illustrator. I made this piece as I was still learning about vector lines and shapes, I had a pretty hard time using them as I just couldn’t get my head round getting the lines and shapes how I want them.

Honestly, I felt I had more control over the shapes if I just drew them out on my IPad. However, I now come to understand that vector shapes are easier to group together and highlight the feature of an image, so that I could edit the colours if need be, so there are upsides to vector images.

I used adobe illustrator to get the image to vectorized and to change the colours of certain sections. I am mostly happy with it, as I was able to learn more about vector lines and shapes! However, I wished I had found the easier way to colour all similar sections sooner than I did as that would’ve saved a lot of time. I learnt how I could take an image made of pixels and turn it into a vectorized image, as well as changing the colours if needed.
